Tucked beneath the Coomber Melon Mountain Range, about 7 km from Rylstone, Kandos grew up around its cement works. Cement from Kandos went into the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other landmarks, earning the town the nickname “the town that built Sydney”. The works closed in 2011, and the old industrial site still stands over the town, a reminder of its past.
Today the town has reinvented itself as a creative village. Browse the galleries, studios, cafés and op shops along the main street, then step back into the past at the Kandos Museum. Time your visit for Cementa, the biennial contemporary arts festival, or the Kandos Street Machine classic car show each January. Kandos is also a gateway to Ganguddy–Dunns Swamp and Wollemi National Park.
