The Guards Van
THE GUARDS VAN – is a charming compact Queen bedroom with en-suite, was opened in April 2021 and is the most recent addition to our train stay . Originally an HG mixed train Guards Van with a small passenger compartment and Guards room, it was built at Eveleigh Carriage Works in 1900. It was converted to a Workman’s Van (L1162), in 1952 before being condemned and sold at Mudgee Yard to Scott McGregor for $60 in 1983. Scott moved it to Ruwenzori in that year and it became a workshop, storeroom and occasional overflow bedroom until its full-scale renovation began back in mid-January 2021. The construction of a roof over the whole area is an excellent addition helping to preserve and cool it all while making a lovely covered social space linking the Station and the Van.

Rail accommodation provisions
For meals, most visitors to Ruwenzori are happy to do their own cooking and bring provisions – we have a well equipped kitchen and a great outdoor BBQ area. The nearest food stores are Gulgong (22km) and Mudgee (30km). Mudgee has several supermarkets open 7 days, plus a number of excellent specialty food stores and cafes. There is a pub at Ulan (10km). As well as this, there are numerous wineries in the area that allow convenient day trips. Our private caterer is also available on request for larger groups, email us for details.
Children
Children – absolutely welcome, although we should warn parents of pre-schoolers that Ruwenzori is not child proof (e.g. lots of things to climb up/fall off/squash fingers etc.). Parents of littlies will need to keep a close eye on them at all times. Older children will find the place fascinating, and babies do seem to sleep and eat better at Ruwenzori than at home!
Pets
Pets – sorry, but we can’t allow pets as they have proved to be a menace to our local fauna in the past.
Disabled Access
As the self contained train accommodation provided at Ruwenzori is in antique railway carriages which have very narrow doorways, wheelchair access is difficult. The two main carriages are accessible via a ramp (no steps) but some of the site depends on steps and/or has a steep slope around it.
Smoking
We have a No Smoking indoors policy. If smoking outdoors, please remember you are surrounded by Aussie Bush so dispose of your butts with care.
In addition to the three self contained rail accommodation carriages, Ruwenzori features many fascinating historical items from our railway past – you could spend all day just walking discovering the treasures.
Surrounding the carriages are cottage-style gardens, fountains and an abundance of unusual objects which contribute to the unique and fascinating nature of Ruwenzori. In every corner of the garden is something interesting to see, or a secluded place to relax.
